KS4 Assessment
The Visual Arts Department involves pupils in their assessments, giving them a clear understanding of the progress they are making.
The GCSE scheme is divided into a series of assignments, designed to ensure that teaching incorporates each assessment objective. These are assessed formatively throughout and summatively at the end of each assignment.
Informal assessment of both class and individuals is on-going during all lessons in response to oral work, group work, skill development, progress within specified tasks etc. Oral feedback is given as appropriate. Pupils should be given the opportunity to engage in both self-assessment and peer assessment where either oral or written feedback may be given. They should also be given the opportunity to talk about their work and intentions to the class.
Formal assessment is used throughout each assignment for both classwork and homework. Work is marked using A – G GCSE criteria enabling pupils to understand the level at which they are working. Pupils have a copy of the criteria for each grade in the front of their sketchbooks. Class teachers go through this with each class. In addition staff may write a comment or give verbal feedback which will recognise achievement / effort and point to areas for improvement /development.
At the end of each assignment a summative GCSE grade is awarded for the individual’s collective work within that unit. GCSE criteria are used to assess the grade. GCSE mark sheets are used and a copy given to the pupil to glue in their sketchbooks. This gives thorough feedback on strengths and targets for development. Pupils are also asked to complete a ‘GCSE Evaluation Sheet’ which allows for refection and the setting of future targets. This is glued into their sketchbooks.
The assessment is used to inform future planning and teaching of both the class and individuals.
The department is building up a standardised portfolio of assessed work, containing benchmark evidence of grades at GCSE. Moderation meetings and exemplar materials from the Examination Board are used for this purpose.
Final grades for GCSE work are agreed through departmental moderation in May in accordance with Examination Board requirements. |
