AGT Runshaw

Runshaw College’s Equality and Diversity Competition

Lostock Hall Academy pupils found the project very exciting and rewarding. The project gave pupils the opportunity to explore a range of issues related to equality and diversity and experience work related learning. Pupils worked with an arts practitioner from the creative industries, (Graphic Design) learning Adobe Photoshop techniques to develop ideas related to the theme ‘Make a Difference’. The pupils brainstormed a range of issues associated with citizenship and generated designs based on bullying, crime and racism. Working towards their own self-directed area of study and through collaborative discussion, pupils further developed and submitted the most appropriate design solution. The pupils were thrilled with the rewards ceremony that Runshaw College organised. All pupils involved have now opted for Art courses.

During the past two years staff have visited schools and Educational establishments in China as part of Lancashire Delegations. Our aim is to develop a greater awareness of the Chinese culture and to develop global links as a platform for exchanging ideas and developing the teaching of the Chinese Language. This summer a group of our students will be going to China for three weeks. During that time they will study the Chinese language at Beijing University and visit some of the historic sights in Beijing including the Great Wall of China. This is an exciting development for the school and our students.

We have organised several workshops which have expanded knowledge and understanding. All Year 7 students took part in a cross-curricular day involving Science, Art and Design and Languages. In Science they looked at the origin of fireworks and experimented with different chemicals to create the different coloured flames. In Art and Design they took part in workshops experiencing Chinese brush painting, silk painting, lantern making and the creation of large scale dragons. In languages they learnt about the Chinese culture, how to speak basic Chinese and use chopsticks to eat!
All the work produced went on exhibition at Worden Park during the Chinese New Year Celebrations.
We have hosted a performance by the Traditional Instruments Orchestra from Nanjing University. Students attended the performance as part of their music studies. A group of linguists attended a talk at the Confucius Centre at UCLAN and Year 9 students attended a China day with our partner schools in the area. They experienced Chinese art workshops including mask making, Chinese cuisine and were able to learn and converse in Chinese.

We organised workshops with the primary school in which we looked at the Chinese culture and the making of dragons.

Together with our partner schools we have bid for a Confucius Classroom. This will allow us to develop the Chinese language hosting a teacher from China and support our work in raising awareness of the global position of China and its culture.

Farrington fisheries Sculpture Trail

Year 9 pupils worked on a live project brief for South Ribble Borough Council. The project was part of an environmental regeneration programme that aims to develop the site of Farrington Fisheries, through the inclusion of a sculpture trail.

During art classes, pupils researched the work of Land artists and investigated natural forms as a stimulus for their own design work. Pupils have generated a number of design proposals that are both suitable for 2 dimensional carved pieces and 3 dimensional forms.

To launch this project, South Ribble Borough Council held a short event on Friday 18th March to unveil some of the work.

The event was attended by the Mayor, together with representatives from the local council, council officers, and members of the Shaw Trust.

Royal British Legion Sculpture Project

Year 11 Applied Art and Design pupils worked on a live project brief for The Royal British Legion. The pupils were asked to create a range of design ideas for a sculpture that would be placed in newly refurbished Byng house in Southport.

Byng House provides Poppy Breaks for people from the Service & ex-Service community, who may be recovering from an illness, bereavement or other life affecting events. The aim of the charity is to provide a comfortable and enjoyable Break.

The winning design was created by Joseph Carthy, who worked alongside a professional artist/sculptor to produce the final piece.

Fox Street Sculpture - Homeless and Creative Partnership Projects

As part of the Applied Art and Design course, Year 10 pupils were invited to take part in a live brief. Fox St Homeless shelter was being refurbished and pupils were asked to design a sculpture that would be the central piece for a courtyard area. The space was quite small and the purpose of the sculpture was to create a relaxing piece that would create depth. Each pupil submitted a design by making small scale models and the staff at Fox St selected the one to be made. The design of Naomi Cox was chosen because of the symbolism of protection. To make the piece, a plaster pattern was created to be cast in aluminium and the oval shape was created out of stone. The pupils celebrated at an opening service and a private viewing of the sculpture.

St.Catherines Hospice
Sculpture

On Wednesday 9th May we had the unveiling of the sculpture that we have donated to St Catherines Hospice for permanent exhibition in the Hospice gardens. Karen Sandham, Adam Stopford, Sarah Eastham, Eleanor Hewitt, Rebecca Kent, Sally Livesey and Sam Lewin, together with Mrs Gardner who worked hard for several weeks after school to generate ideas working towards the completed piece of work. The opening was a great success and the sculpture will be on permanent display in the Hospice gardens. Many thanks to Alex Martin for providing musical entertainment at the event.St Catherine's Hospice Sculpture
