Product Design

Welcome to Product Design!

KS3

During Key Stage 3 the pupils are taught the basic skills and techniques associated with designing and developing new products by various methods such as; mood boards, sketching, product rendering, annotating and area specific research. In each year the pupils look at a specific area of Product Design, and develop a product accordingly.

Product design can include areas from all other technology subjects, but is also heavily influenced by Art and Science.

Throughout Key Stage 3, the pupils undertake a wide range of projects. By the end of Key Stage 3, the pupils will have a wider knowledge of design, and a greater subject knowledge.

Current projects include:

Year 7
Puzzle Pack - MDF, Card and Vinyl with Mr Gilbert.

Year 8
Storage Box - MDF, Acrylic and Vinyl with Mr Gilbert.

Year 9
Electronic Buggy - Electronics, MDF, Hips Plastic and card with Mr Gilbert.

Product Design GCSE

At the end of Key Stage 3 the pupils have the opportunity to choose Product Design at GCSE (AQA). The pupils continue to further their knowledge in a range of short design based projects, and longer total projects that mimic the year 11 controlled assessment. The projects can be extremely diverse, as designing for 25 and 50 years in the future can be undertaken, the only limiting factor is imagination! The controlled assessment is done throughout year 11 and the end of year 10, and makes up 60% of the final mark. The pupils all start from the same research. After analysing and concluding the research, the pupils generate many more design than in the other technology subjects, and develop these ideas to a high level. From this the pupils can make a working prototype or a model of their design proposal. Pupils will spend approximately 10 – 12 months completing their coursework. \
