Textile Design

Welcome to Textile Design!

KS3

Textiles is taught within the Design & Technology department at Key Stage 3. Here the emphasis is on learning making skills in order to produce artefacts of a high standard.

At Key Stage 4 pupils who opt to take textiles will study within the Art & Design Department. This is to ensure that any wishing to pursue a career in the textiles or fashion industry will have the necessary background to study at post 16.

Designing is a key element in both disciplines and pupils are expected to research work by artists and designers in order to produce unique designs. At all times pupils are encouraged to produce products that are fit for purpose.

Current projects include:

Year 7
Drawstring Bag - Calico with Miss Kozera.

Year 8
Stationery Set - Paper printed design with Miss Kozera.

Year 9
Novelty Apron with Pocket - Variety of fabrics (Haberdashery) with Miss Kozera.

The Annual Trip to The Clothes Show

Every December the Textiles Department organises a visit to the Clothes Show in the Birmingham NEC. Pupils from Year 9 considering opting for Textiles or Art & Design, together with GCSE pupils from those subjects are invited to go.

Approximately fifty pupils and staff set off bright and early to try to miss the morning traffic.  The highlight of the day is the Catwalk Show.

Pupils studying Textiles have the opportunity to attend educational seminars and take part in workshops.

There are always plenty of bargains for those wishing to purchase early Christmas presents.

Artist - Ruth Spaak

The GCSE Textile pupils have the opportunity to work with artists to inspire their work. Artists have included Ruth Spaak, a mixed media textile artist who works with innovative materials. This has included plastic and metal. Here are some examples of pupils work from the workshop.

Artist - Jessie Chorley

Recycling is an excellent way of turning old discarded Textiles into new work. Pupils worked with textile artist Jessie Chorley who is inspired by vintage fabrics, quotes and memorabilia to create new precious items. Here are some examples of pupils work from the workshop.
