The Progress Units are delivered to pupils in Year 7 who require additional support with literacy skills. The sessions are delivered every Monday at lunchtime from the October half term.
English ICT & Homework Club
The English ICT suite is available every lunchtime, allowing pupils to complete research, homework and coursework independently.
Literacy Games Club
The Literacy Games Club is open to all KS3 pupils every Wednesday lunchtime providing an opportunity to develop literacy and communication skills whilst enjoying a range of literacy based games.
Achievements
Each year, Year 7 pupils take part in a national Readathon competition. Pupils are asked to read as much as they possibly can in their English lessons and in their free time in order to raise money for the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund and the Roald Dahl Foundation. Year 8 & 9 pupils participate in a Spellathon competition, testing their word skills and raising money for Mencap. Each activity raises substantial contributions to these charities. In addition, for the last few years, World Book Day has been celebrated by encouraging pupils and staff alike to attend in fancy dress as a famous book character, producing some memorable outfits and encouraging conversations about our favourite books. This is an event we hope to continue in the future.
Keris Stainton
A group of budding Year 9 writers enjoyed a Lancashire Festival Celebration at Lostock Hall Library. Pupils got the chance to meet local author, Keris Stainton, who had a book in the Top 10 of the Lancashire Book of the Year Award last year, "Della Says OMG" and who has a book on the long-list for this year’s award, "Jessie Hearts NYC".
Pupils developed their skills in planning stories, building characters and writing interesting openings. Watch this space...the next JK Rowling is amongst us!
Competitions
The English Department regularly encourages pupils to extend their writing skills by entering writing competitions. In particular, we have seen great success in the 'I have a dream' poetry competition where 33 pupils had their work published. A fantastic achievement! |
