Activities & Events
The history department provides a lot of enrichment opportunities to enable pupils to progress in their knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of History during the time at Lostock Hall.
AGT workshops with Liverpool John Moore’s University and the University of Central Lancashire.
AQA revision sessions with Alan Mendum; Chief Examiner for AQA History.
Holocaust Memorial Day
In both January 2010 and 2011, students from years 9 and 11 have partaken in a series of workshops to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. In both years, pupils took part in workshops designed to increase their understanding of the Holocaust and listened to the personal experience of Rudi Oppenheimer, a Holocaust survivor and former prisoner of Bergen Belsen. After Holocaust Memorial Day, the History, Art and English departments ran a project which involved all year nine pupils creating butterflies for a display focused on the experiences of children in the holocaust.
In January 2012 we are holding another Holocaust Memorial Day for year 9 and 11 pupils.
Holocaust Memorial Visit. Key Stage Four pupils are provided with the opportunity to visit Poland and witness the atrocities that were inflicted on Jews during the Holocaust. During the visit, students visit Auschwitz -Birkenau and the factory of Oscar Schindler as well as the former ghetto and site of deportations made famous in the film; Schindler’s List.
Past pupils who have taken part in the visit have found it deeply moving and an experience which they will never forget.
Jack the Ripper Tour
As part of the programme of study in year 8, pupils consider the impact of industrialisation on crime, exploring the case file of Jack the Ripper.
To enable pupils to try to make sense of one of the most infamous cases of crime in British history, year 8 pupils are given the chance to take part in an educational visit to London which involved pupils being taken on a guided tour around the crime scenes of Jack the Ripper.
