Physical Education GCSE
Assessment
Pupils follow the Edexcel GCSE PE course which is comprised of:
60% Practical Work
40% Written Examination
Practical Work
All pupils complete activity blocks in the following areas:
Games
Athletics
Adventurous activities
Health Related Exercise
Pupils are assessed on their practical performances over the two year duration of the course with their four highest scoring activities going towards their final mark (48%). Pupils are also required to demonstrate their knowledge of the rules, techniques and their ability to analyse performance in one of their chosen activities (12%).
Written Examination
The paper comprises of three parts:
Part 1: Multiple Choice
Part 2: Short Answers Questions
Part 3: Scenario Questions
The theoretical work can be divided up into three main sections:
- Anatomy and Physiology (skeleton, muscles, joints, blood, respiratory system)
- Exercise and training (health, fitness, diet, hygiene, drugs)
- Safety aspects of physical activity (sports injuries and prevention)
- Homework is set on a regular basis and pupils must be prepared to meet deadlines. Pupils are required to complete a piece of coursework based on the design and development of a Personal
- Exercise Programme (PEP). They must also research a series of questions based on analysing performance within a chosen sport. Additional resources and links to relevant PE based websites are also available through STAR.
