Our designation as a Specialist Visual Arts College (2004) a High Performing Specialist School (2008) and the Arts Councils’ award of Artsmark Gold (2009) recognise the high quality art provision. The courses generate energy, excitement and enthusiasm that permeate the ethos of our school and can be seen in the quality of our exhibitions and displays. We are proud of the achievements of our pupils and the intense personal nature of art experiences that enable them to explore complex issues, make sense of the world and express their thoughts, feelings and actions.
Lostock Hall Academy Arts Policy
The school is committed to giving pupils access to an inclusive, rich and diverse arts education both within and beyond the school day. We have planned development for the collective arts (including creative writing, dance, drama, English literature, media studies, music and visual arts) and each discrete subject has its own development plan and handbook (detailing curriculum and policies). These are evaluated and reviewed annually through pupil feedback, departmental and whole school self- evaluation, Senior Leadership Team Line management monitoring and reports to the Governing Body.
We know that the arts, with their emphasis on personal experience and practical activity, involve pupils in a range of ways of learning (visual, aural, kinaesthetic) and recognise different forms of intelligence. Our curriculum and approach to teaching ensure that the arts are inclusive and enable all pupils to achieve, increasing self-esteem and confidence. We understand that a good arts education develops aesthetic awareness and offers pupils access to a range of arts-related careers. We also recognise that it develops creativity, innovative thinking, teamwork and a flexible approach to problem solving – all essential skills for employability and well- being in today’s society.
We have found that arts experiences, activities, teaching and learning strategies raise achievement across the curriculum. This underpins the ethos of our school and is central to our designation (since 2004) as a specialist arts college.
We have a wide range of arts partnerships with organisations, artists, partner schools, colleges and the wider community which both enrich and contextualise the arts for our pupils and provide professional development for our staff. These, together with high quality resources, are important to our provision within the arts.
The arts generate remarkable energy and excitement within the school and arts events bring the whole school together creating a strong sense of unity both within the school and the wider community. We value the far reaching impact of the arts within our school, together with the life-long influence they can have on our pupils as audiences or participators.
