Religious Education This was the message behind the multi media installation experienced by some of our pupils. We were one of the first schools in the North West to host the exhibition which is touring the nation. We were keen to engage the pupils with community cohesion issues in an interactive and cross curricular way. Religious Education, Geography and History Departments all collaborated to give the pupils this exciting opportunity, which complements other work they have done in this area. Escape to Safety is housed in a 12.5m box-trailer. It enabled pupils to experience something of what it is like to be a refugee seeking asylum in Britain, providing them with the opportunity to think about issues such as what is our image of asylum seekers and where does this image come from, and how should we treat people who seek refuge in our country? The idea is that through engaging actively with real life situations rather than passively from a book or film it is hoped that a deeper, more effective learning will take place. Each participant walked through a labyrinth of 8 'stations' depicting the different stages a refugee experiences before seeking asylum in Britain. On portable mp3 players, they were accompanied by refugee voices from Rwanda, Afghanistan and Palestine interacting with border immigration officials and the media. Escape to Safety is provided by Global Link, a Development Education Centre (DEC) based in Lancaster in the UK, which works on global citizenship issues such as human rights, diversity, refugees, fair trade and sustainable development. Year 8 visit to a Preston Mosque As part of the study of major world religions, in line with the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. Year 8 cover a unit on Islam. In order to broaden their experience and enhance their understanding of this topic pupils took part in a visit to a local Mosque in Preston, where they had the opportunity to meet an Imam and learn more about Islam from a practitioner of that faith, in the context of our local community. |
